Pairing Drinks with Sushi

Do you like to enjoy your sushi with a glass of sake at our Issaquah sushi restaurant? It’s a logical enough choice, pairing a classic Japanese dish with a classic Japanese beverage. However, if you were to order sushi with sake in Japan, you might get some odd looks. Surprising as it may seem, Japanese diners will rarely drink sake with their sushi.

It’s important in Japan to achieve balance in a meal, which means getting all five of the different taste sensations. Since sushi and sake are both primarily made out of rice, the two are not different enough to be enjoyed at the same time. Most Japanese diners will drink either green tea or beer with their sushi. If sake is enjoyed during the meal, it is reserved for early on during the appetizer course.
